What A Ride

Category : Church, Faith, Student Ministry

Life has been very crazy for me lately, but it has been a good kind of crazy. My daughter graduated from 6th grade, which means she is now a part of the youth ministry at our church. I have waited for this day since she was born. People told me that I was nuts to be excited about my kids becoming teenagers, but when that is the age group you work with it makes perfect sense because you know how to relate with them.

HannahDadMilleniumForceSo her first big youth trip was Rockpointe’s annual trip to America’s Roller Coast known as Cedar Point. We had so much fun together and I loved seeing her hanging out with the teens. As you can tell by the picture she pushed herself and rode one of the big coasters with her dad called the Millenium Force. It was a really great day.

During some of this time I went down to a church near Cincinnati, OH to interview for their open youth pastor position. Most of you know that I have been looking for a full-time youth pastor position since I graduated from Bible college in 1999. And have been looking to get back into some form of a paid youth pastor position since I left the church I was a part-time youth pastor at in March of 2005. It has been a long journey only to be added to when I got laid off in the middle of January from the factory job I had. So going for an interview was a very nice thing, but I really didn’t expect to get the job, because we had been on interviews for youth pastor positions a couple of times before.

I was really shocked when they called us back down for a second interview and was even more shocked when I was told that I was the only on being invited back down. So we made arrangements to go back down the last weekend in June, which threw a wrench into our annual 4th of July trip up to Manistee, MI. We adjusted our arrival dates with the campground and figured we would just take a day off to rest in between driving 4 hours south to Cincy and then 4 hours north to Manistee.

While we were down for the interview we fell more and more in love with the church and the people there. And they seemed to like us as well. We came back home with a good feeling about this one, but we had good feelings about other ones as well so we were cautiously optimistic.

The pastor had said that we would probably hear something back before he left for his trip to Haiti, which was Friday (July 3rd). However, I told people that we wouldn’t hear back until he came back on July 14th so we didn’t have to hear the constant barrage of questions if we “had heard anything yet”.

Yesterday I heard back from them and I am in negotiations to be the youth pastor at The River Church in Liberty Township, OH. I am very excited to be finally getting back into “the game” and can not wait to get down there.

We do not know exactly when we will be heading down there, but hope to be down there either the first or second week of August. The schools down there start a lot earlier than schools here in Michigan, so we want to get down there and get the kids settled in before school starts.

There are only two sad things in all of this. One is leaving all of our family, friends and loved ones here in Michigan. But we are only 4 hours south and we will be real close to Kings Island, so you are welcome to come visit. However, we will be home from time to time visiting family. The other sad thing is that I will be living in enemy territory with all of those Buckeyes, but they need Jesus too!

Lastly, I want to leave you with this video of Mike Yaconelli. I think it speaks perfectly to what I am getting into. Watch out River Church! It is going to be a fun ride! I can’t wait!!!

Rethinking Church

Category : Church

I saw this video and it made my heart jump! I agree with this. Especially the line that says, “What if church was more of an out-of-church experience. An opportunity to prove what we say we believe with our lives. Then perhaps Sunday could be a day of rest and reflection on all that we have accomplished Monday through Saturday.”

I had posted a statement on my Facebook status that got quite a heated response from people and I think that this video speaks to it. The statement was…

“If Christians in the U.S. would be quiet for a year and only do good works, that would be evangelism. Our actions are way behind our words.” —Dieter Zander

It reminds me a lot of the quote by St. Francis of Assisi…

Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.

It is really time for the church here in America to rethink how they do church and start thinking “outside the box”, and I believe that the box is a metaphor for the church’s building. Let’s make Sunday a day where we can rest, reflect and celebrate all that we did during the week to share the Gospel with people, even if we never used words.

What do you think?

HT to Adam McLane.

I’m Ready Now

Category : Church, Faith

My beautiful wife posted this video on her blog yesterday and I had to re-post it here.

A lot of people who know my wife and I know that we have been on this long journey of searching for the place that God would have us to serve at. My desire since I was a young boy was to be a pastor and to serve God in full-time ministry. After leaving the church I was serving at as youth pastor for 5 and a half years, God led us on a path of healing and learning that I would not trade for anything. I have learned and grown so much as a person these past 4 years.

During that time there was something in me that knew that God had some work to do in me before I was ready to step back into ministry. I still pursued opportunities and sent out resumes all during that time and the whole time our prayer was that God would close the doors to the places we were not supposed to be at. These past 6 or 8 months I have felt that I am really ready now to take that position, so I was praying to God when I was in Pittsburgh for the National Youth Workers Convention about it and I felt that He told me that I was ready. The problem now is that the place He had for me wasn’t ready yet. I am hoping that it won’t be too much longer before they are ready, because I don’t know how much longer we can survive on unemployment. The song “Ready Now” by Desperation Band really captures some of what we are feeling. I posted the lyrics below in case you want to read them.

You come like You promised You would
I want to surrender for good
I know that I need You
And I don’t want to keep living life alone

So take my heart
And make it new
Make it true
And make it like You
Take my hands
I lift them high
They’re Yours not mine to do
Do what You will (3X)

I feel like a blind man in Your sight
I know that I’m wicked in Your eyes
So wash me and make me shine like Your Son
I want to tell everyone
That You’re the only one

So take my heart
And make it new
Make it true
And make it like You
Take my hands
I lift them high
They’re Yours not mine to do
Do what You will (3X)

I’m ready now (3X)
Do what you will
I’m ready now (6X)
Do what you will
I’m ready now (3X)

So take my heart
And make it new
Make it true
And make it like You
Take my hands
I lift them high
They’re Yours not mine to do
Do what You will

I’m ready now (3X)
Do what You will
I’m ready now (3X)
Do what You will
I’m ready now (3X)
Do what You will
I’m ready now (3X)

Church Websites

Category : Church

church-website-cartoonI have been looking for a position at a church for quite sometime now and as a result I have been looking at a lot of church websites. When I look for a position at a church I am not just merely looking for a job, but I am looking for a church that I would want to attend. So I have been pretty picky in which churches I send a resume to and if they are a church that is far away I can only learn about them from their website.

As a result I have become a self proclaimed expert on church websites. There have been many churches that may have been great churches that I did not send my resume to simply because of their website. In essence I have become a church shopper and their websites are telling me whether or not I want to attend their church. The reality is that there are many people out there that are my age and younger that the web has become their main source for choosing a church, so it is important for churches to produce a good website that has updated information if they want to attract young families and young adults.

A couple of things that I would like to see on a church’s website would be as follows.

1) Pictures of the staff and blurbs about the staff members as well. This helps the staff people become more personal and gives you an idea as to who is running the church. The photos should be fun and not too formal. Even a group shot of the entire staff would be fine.

2) Give us a FAQ page about the church that answers questions like what kind of style of dress is expected. What things are offered during the main service (i.e. kid’s ministry, youth ministry, etc.). What about the offering or communion?

3) Video samples of the music service and a sermon sample, so that you can get a flavor of the service.

4) There is really no reason why a church that has a website does not also podcast their sermons, so you can get an idea of what it is like before you go. Even if it is only the audio.

5) A listing of the different ministries you have to offer and what they are for. Not everyone knows what all those titles that the church places on things means, so make it clear as to whom it is for in the description.

6) A simple statement of beliefs as well as a link to a more in depth version on a separate page or that is downloadable as a .pdf would be nice.

7) Pictures of you facility is always a plus, because when I am driving there it would be nice to know what I am looking for. Also a map that links back to Google Maps is always a plus and Google makes this really easy for you to do.

8 ) This may be a personal thing, but I would love to have links to blogs that some of the staff people have. It is always nice to see their thoughts on current events, Bible studies they are currently doing, or whatever they want to blog about.

9) But the most important thing is to make your site really easy to navigate. Have someone you know that does not attend your church check it out and give you feedback. It would even be good to have someone who doesn’t even go to church at all check out your site as well and give you feedback.

10) Make sure it is updated. Nothing looks worse than to have outdated information about events at the church. I saw some churches that still had Christmas stuff on their sites under events and it is February.

11) There are many great tools out there that can help you build some really great websites. A really easy way to build a site and keep it updated is by using WordPress. It is designed for blogging but can easily be adapted for a general website. I saw a larger church that is close to me that has a website and it was pathetic. It looked like something that you would have found back in the Web 1.0 days. That is sad. In a church that size there has to be someone that can build a decent website. Heck, ask one of the teenagers there to do it for you. And, for the record, sites build solely around Flash are kind of lame.

Those are my thoughts as someone who is using the web to church shop. What do you think?

Texas Recap

Category : Church

Howdy! Many of you know that over this past weekend (Saturday, January 31st- Tuesday, February 3rd) that Kimmy and I went down to Texas for a job interview with a church for their Director of Student Ministries position. Well, we made it down there and back safely. In fact, we had a great time!

The pastor and his wife put us up in a “mother-in-law suite” that they have at their house and it was really nice. We had our own little place but we were also able to have a little bit more time hanging out with them and getting to know each other better. It was a perfect situation and a lovely place to stay.

While we were there we had a pretty full weekend. On Saturday after we arrived the pastor and his wife took us out to a very nice dinner at a VERY nice restaurant. The meal was wonderful but the time spent with them was even better. We shared lots of stories and lots of laughs.

On Sunday we obviously attended one of their services and we were really impressed with the friendliness of the people there as well as the diversity of the crowd, which we are very happy about. The service was wonderful and felt very comfortable to us. It was definitely a place that we could call home. After the service a group of the college students there came up to us and asked us to go out to lunch with them to a place called Freebirds, which is like a Chipotle. We had a wonderful time getting to know them, especially since I will be also working with the college ministry at the church.

Then later on that day the moment of truth came when I had an interview with the committee at the church that helps make staff decisions. Kimmy and I were both pretty nervous and it was exacerbated by the fact that they made us wait for a while as they met to go over some of their questions for us. However, our nerves were for naught because the people were very nice and the interview went very well. We had a great time getting to know the people who serve on the committee and look forward to hopefully seeing them again.

After that meeting we headed over to someone’s house to watch the Super Bowl with some of the people from the young adults group at the church. We even stayed afterward and watched “The Office” with them. It was another really great time. It was nice to hang out and get to know them, especially since many of them would probably be people we would hang out with if we moved down there. And so it was nice to feel like we were already making friends before we potentially move down.

On Monday we met with the pastor in the morning and went over our Flippen Profiles, which is a thing we had to fill out before we came. It is basically like a personality profile that helps you discover areas in your life that you could use improving on to make you a better person. I have to say that these things nailed Kimmy and I dead on. It is really neat to look at these things and see ways that we can improve our lives and to also know that this pastor wants to see us become better people as well.

Then we went and looked at the house that we would live in should we be so fortunate to be the one’s they picked for the position. It was a really nice house and in a great neighborhood for us to raise our kids. It is bigger than the house we have now, so it would be nice to have some extra space for us to live in and entertain teens and friends. After that we met up with some of the other people on staff at the church for lunch and had a really great time getting to know them.

Then we took Kimmy to her manicure and pedicure appointment while I joined the pastor for a couple of denominational pastor meetings. I actually did have a good time getting to meet some of them and hear some things about the denomination and how it operates. It was also nice to spend some time with the pastor talking about ministry and the position I would be filling. After that I went back to their house and he went onto another meeting at the church that he had to be at, so Kimmy and I went into town to do some souvenir shopping. We bought the kids some Texas A&M shirts and we bought one for me also. Since we were going out to dinner that night with the pastor and his wife, I decided to wear my shirt to dinner. (Hey, a little brown-nosing never hurt anyone, right?)

On Tuesday we headed back home but had to stop by the city of Todd Mission, TX, which we saw on the way as we were driving to the church. So we made sure to stop on our way back to the airport and snapped this picture of me in front of this building they had there. It is a very small town, but I was proud to find it.

All in all it was a really great trip. We enjoyed being able to escape the snow and cold, but it was more enjoyable to spend time with the people at the church down there. I will find out sometime next week if they offer us the job. They are bringing someone out this weekend to interview and will make the decision after that. I will keep y’all posted.

The First Sunday of Advent

Category : Church, Faith

Today, was the first Sunday of Advent and it was also the first Sunday that me and my family has ever observed Advent. Last year I blogged about my disappointment in the Christmas season going by so fast. Well, this year we bought an Advent candle holder at Family Christian Stores and we had a wreath that it fit perfectly with. (I posted a picture below.)

We also a book to help guide us through the season that is entitled A Family Advent: Keeping the Savior in the Season and it has readings for each day. I am really excited to bring a whole new depth of meaning to this holiday season and I am hopeful that this will not only bring our family closer to God, but closer to each other as well. If this morning’s reading and discussion was any indication I think it will definitely be true.

Elton John Doesn’t Believe in Gay Marriage

Category : Church, Politics

By Andy Kropa, AP - from the USA Today

I blogged my thoughts regarding gay marriage a couple of months ago and was shocked when I read in the USA Today that Elton John agreed with me. You can read the article here. Here is an excerpt from the article.

“I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership,” John says. “The word ‘marriage,’ I think, puts a lot of people off.

“You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

The whole point in my blog post is that marriage is a religious institution whereas civil unions are a governmental one. So let the two of them be separate but require all heterosexual couples and homosexual couples to have to have a civil union, and let the churches do marriages. I believe that it is the only fair way to handle this situation in a country that has freedoms.

As A Christian I Am Sorry

Category : Church, Faith, Life, NYWC 08, Politics

I have been recently been watching One Punk Under God on the Sundance Channel, which is the story of Jay Bakker. Jay is the son of Jim and Tammy-Faye Bakker, who were the people behind the PTL Club and the original televangelists. He is also the founding pastor of Roveloution Church in New York City and the author of the book “Son of a Preacher Man”, which I have read and reviewed here.

His life story has really got me thinking about my life story and how I was raised as a Christian myself, along with the attitudes that I have developed as a result. As you can see from the picture I have posted here, which is a sticker from Jay’s church, it says that they are “sorry for being self-righteous judgmental bastards.” While that is pretty strong language I think there is a lot of truth to that statement, especially for me personally. As I have been really examining my walk with God and the way I live out my faith in the world around me I have realized that I have not been exactly living my life the way that Jesus would. I don’t believe that I have always shown people the grace and love that as a person who is a Christ follower should.

This recent Presidential election has really brought a lot of it once again to my attention and I realized how much of a jerk I had been towards people who thought different than me when it came to politics. But this post is about even more than just that.

I have been at the National Youth Workers Convention in Pittsburgh this weekend and have heard many compelling messages. One of the people that spoke was a gentleman named Andrew Marin, who is the mastermind behind The Marin Foundation that is “the very first organization that works to build a bridge between the religious and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) communities in a non-threatening, research and biblically oriented fashion.” Andrew challenged the youth workers here in Pittsburgh to really get out there and do what they can to reach out to gay teenagers and show them the love of God, and to be intentional about it instead of just waiting for it to happen. Unfortunately, the churches reaction to people in the gay and lesbian community has not been one of love and that has made the church one of the last places on earth that they want to visit, so being intentional and going to them is the only way for us to really show them the love of Christ.

The next speaker after Andy was Soong-Chan Rah, who spoke on the issue of race in the church, which sadly is still and issue that our Presidential election has showed to be something that is a problem. The whole reason why Soong-Chan Rah was invited to speak was because of a skit in one of the books that Youth Specialties published that had stereotyped Asian-Americans in a very bad way. You can read Marko’s apology for it here, but the most important thing that rose out of it was the dialogue that was started regarding racism in the church. We were challenged by Soong-Chan as to whether some of our beliefs were based on a cultural faith based in predominately white America or was it really based on the Bible.

If you want to hear either Andy or Soong-Chan’s messages you can get them here.

This journey that I have personally been on has been great. I think that taking steps back every so often and looking at your life in light of the life of Christ is such a valuable and important thing. I know for me it has caused me to open my eyes and reflect upon the way that I treat my neighbors and even the way I treat fellow Christ-followers. So as a Christian I am sorry that the way I have lived my life has not caused people to see Jesus in me. But I am going to do my best to make sure that changes from here on out.

The Amen Sisters

Category : Church, Fun

My church has a service in between the two services called Family Summit where the kids take their parent’s to church, and this past Sunday they had Kimmy and two other ladies do a song. They were called “The Amen Sisters” and they did a song called “Boogie Woogie Hebrew Man”, which was done to the tune of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by The Andrew Sisters. I brought my video camera and posted it here for your viewing pleasure. My wife is the one in the middle with the purple blouse.

Labor Day Fun 2008

Category : Church, Life

Tomorrow I am getting together with most of the people who were on my volunteer youth staff at the church were I was a youth pastor. I have not hung out with that entire group in about 3.5 years and that has been way too long. I developed such rich and good friendships with everyone and have maintained some contact with each of them, but it will be fun to have the whole gang back together again.

We used to hang out and play games together and just talk about life so much. It was on of the best teams that I was ever a part of. We modeled what the Christian life is all about and I believe it was the direct reason why that student ministry there was so successful. It really had not much to do with with me and a majority of it was devoted to all of us pastoring those teens together.

Hopefully one day soon I will be able to formulate another team together that can be just as good as that team and we can have a profound impact in the lives of students. Half the fun I had as a youth pastor was investing in the lives of those leaders and seeing them have meaningful relationships with teens. So tomorrow while people in Detroit will be celebrating the labor unions, I will be celebrating our union together and the labor of love that we collaborated on together.
