Today, December 23rd is Festivus. For those of you who do not know the joy of Festivus, feel free to watch the video clip that shows the history of this great holiday. Because we are going to be traveling back to Michigan on Christmas Eve after our church’s Christmas Eve service we decided to have our family Christmas today. I think it is great that we are doing it on Fetivus. I should make Caleb have to pin me for the celebration to end. All we are missing is the aluminum pole.

I have taken my daughter to the Daddy/Daughter Dances at her school since she was in Kindergarten except for her 2nd grade year and yesterday I took her to her last one as a 6th grader. I remember that first year and looking at all of those 6th grade girls and thinking about how huge they looked compared to my little girl. This year my “little” girl was one of those big girls.
I took a look at all of the pictures from the years and wanted to put them up here. It is amazing how much she has grown and changed. I have even changed quite a bit. I like that as my daughter as aged I have also gotten quite a bit more fit and trim. If you want to see all the pictures we took this year you can see them here. But for now take a look at the ones through the years….

Then the Detroit Lions should be in good company. The Lions have completed the “perfect” season. They have gone 0-16 and became the first team in the history of the NFL to lose all 16 regular season games. Although, they are not alone in going winless during the regular season because the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers did the that as well, but it was only a 14 game season then.
However, the Lions are even bigger losers because at least Tampa Bay was in their first season in the NFL. Whereas the Lions have been playing since 1930 in the NFL, that is 78 years. Not too mention the fact that, I believe, the Lions have done something that will never be duplicated by another NFL team and for the past . They went undefeated in the pre-season, which no other team did this year, and then they lost every game in the regular season. I don’t see another team being able to do that.
What is the problem? Is it that the coach? Is it the GM? Is it the players? Are they cursed? I would say cursed but only because we are cursed to have William Clay Ford, Sr. as the owner and he is the sole problem with this team. Look at the numbers he has produced since he took over sole ownership of the team in 1964. In 684 games as owner he has amassed a whopping 281-390-13 record with a 41% winning percentage. He has had 13 winning seasons coming in 1964, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1980, 1983, 1991*, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 2000. That is only 8 in my lifetime! And only 4 seasons .500 or better coming in 1974, 1975, 1981, and 1999. He has had 9 playoff appearances with only 1 win, which came in 1991.
That is absolutely pathetic! The only thing that will help the Lions to improve is for the William Clay Ford, Sr. to sell the team. I do not believe that the Lions will be any good as long a person with the last name of Ford owns the team. So please don’t pass it onto your son. Just sell the team, Mr. Ford. As a Lions fan I beg you to do this. Look at your record and tell me if you believe that you are successful enough to be retained as owner.
And I beg of every Lions fan out there to stop buying their product until the improve. Just because they hire some great coach or GM, or draft some young stud(s) doesn’t mean they have improved. Don’t keep falling into the same trap and give this idiot owner of ours anymore money. Stay away from their product. Make him lose so much money that he is forced to sell the team or fold the team, so we can get a new expansion franchise. The only sign that the Lions have improved is that William Clay Ford, Sr. has sold the team. I beg of you to take a stand and demand change.

Marko had this interesting little app on his blog that shows when a Twitterer Tweets (time of day, day of the week, and frequency, as well as responses). If you don’t know what Twitter is then get with the program. And if you do, then follow me.
Anyway, there is a lull in mine from midnight until 5:00a most days and then during the week it picks up around 5:00a and 6:00a, which is when I get to work and then lulls during the 7:00a-8:00a hours then picks back up at 9:00a when the rest of the world wakes up. It is pretty interesting to look at and see those patterns.

HT to Marko.

I posted this on my Facebook and wanted to do it here as well, because not everyone is on Facebook and that is just silly.
Leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn’t matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember! Don’t send a message, leave a comment on here. Next, re-post this on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It’s actually pretty cool (and funny) to see the responses.

I always love going to the Big House to see the University of Michigan play football. So when a friend informed me that I could have the opportunity to go, because he knew someone that had tickets they were willing to sell, I said “Yes!” And the fact that they were playing the University of Toledo I figured I had a shot at seeing them win, thereby extending my viewing them winning streak. Then this past Saturday happened.
I had taken one of the students from my church with me, so he could experience Big House football for the first time. You can only imagine how heart broken we were to see our boys in the maize and blue get upset 13-10. Not only that but to also quite likely see our 33 bowl game appearance streak get flushed down another kind of bowl.
Coach Rod we are patient and we know you will eventually bring us back. But please pull out a miracle, so we can make it to a bowl game this year. That is all we ask and all we want now. You have our loyalty, but we want a bowl.

This video has been making it’s rounds on the net and I wanted to share it here.
As disturbing and even slightly funny that that video is, I find it very funny that when David Crowder does it and somehow makes the song so much better. And I would love to hear it on his next album or even performed at the National Youth Workers Convention.

No, I am not breaking my self-imposed ban on talking politics. I am using this reference in regards to the pathetic Detroit Lions organization. I said before that I was ready to turn in my fan card and I still don’t know why I have not. Today, they once again put a band-aid on a problem that needs a tourniquet. They fired their General Manager, Matt Millen. You can read more about it here. This is the official statement from William Clay Ford, Sr….
“I have relieved Matt Millen of his duties effective immediately,” Ford said in a released statement. “I believe that this decision is in the best interest of this organization. I appreciate Matt’s efforts. Matt worked tirelessly during his tenure to win, and he would be the first one to tell you that you have to win in this league. It just didn’t work out.
“The support of our fans continues to be incredible and they deserve a winner. Every decision we make must focus on that goal, and I believe this decision today will allow this team to move forward in a positive manner.
“I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season. Our sole focus now is preparing for our next game against Chicago. The entire organization must work together and do whatever we can to make this a successful season. Despite our record, it is still early and there is time to turn this season around.
“These decisions are for the duration of the 2008 season. Once the season is over, we will undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our entire football operation and put together a plan that we believe will transform this team into a winner.”
You may have noticed that I bolded a couple of statements in that quote and let me tell you Mr. William Clay Ford, Sr. that if you are concerned about the organization and the fans then the best thing you can do is sell the team Seriously, look at your record as owner of the Lions organization. In the 44 years that you have been the owner you have produced 13 winning seasons for the fans. And just so you know Matt Millen was 6 years old when you bought the team, so I don’t thin he was the problem. You are! Please, for the love of every Detroit Lions fan either sell the team or move it somewhere else so we can hopefully get a new NFL franchise here. I would love to see them bring back the Michigan Panthers.
Mitch Albom said it best in his article on Tuesday, which you can read here. Here is the best part of his article….
So it was nice of Bill Ford Jr. to state the obvious. But you can fire the GM, you’ll still have the team. You can fire the team, you’ll still have the owner. You can fire the owner, and you’ll have a good start.
But you can’t fire the owner.
You see our problem.
But the bigger problem is that the people over at firemillen.com will now have nothing to complain about. That is at least until the Lions hire a new GM and then they can buy the domain firewhatshisname.com. Better yet, why don’t they just buy firetheLionsGM.com and make it easy on themselves? Until dumb fans like them realize that the real problem is the owner we will keep going down this same road year after year. I even had a friend call me all excited because “next year they were going to be better”. I don’t know how many times I have heard that. I will have no hope for the Lions to be a successful franchise until there is no longer a person with the last name of Ford as the owner.

Mike Yaconelli was the founder and owner of Youth Specialties as well as the pastor of what he dubbed “the slowest growing church in America”. I never really knew much about the man until after he passed away in 2003. About a year ago I bought and read his book Messy Spirituality, which I coffee shop talking with you. There is no doubt that Mike not only loves Jesus with his whole being, but that he also loves God’s people as well. That is really the heart of what Mike is saying in this book.
Mike encourages you to jump first and fear later. He also doesn’t want people to forget that Jesus tells us to become like a child and Mike explores that idea in this book. I found myself at times getting into some very mischievous moods, because he would talk about playing and having fun like children do and then being reminded of the importance of fearing God. There is such a healthy balance of that that needs to be maintained. It reminds me of what Rick Warren likes to say about not taking ourselves serious, but taking God serious.
Mike does another great job of writing and I would encourage you to pick up this book and give it a read. You won’t regret it and you might just find yourself indulging in a little irresponsible passion. I posted a YouTube video below that is a tribute to Mike Yaconelli that will give you a little bit of an idea of his message to youth workers.
