History Made and Dream Fulfilled

Category : Politics, Sports

Michael Phelps has been dubbed the greatest Olympian ever after winning 8 golds in a single Olympic games as well as 14 golds lifetime. That is more than any other Olympian and quite an accomplishment for someone who has at least one more Olympics to go.

And since he is a Michigan Man, I am all the more happier to have seen him win those golds. There was only one race I missed on the TV, but I got to see it online, and it was the first relay race when the team came back at the end. Everyone of his races had me cheering and the best had to be his .001 win in the Fly. It had me cheering right along with him and I loved his families reaction. It was as the MasterCard commercials say “Priceless”. It was a truly historic moment and it fulfilled a dream that Michael had since he was young.

However, that is not what this post is really about, but I wanted to mention it because it was historic in it’s own right. But what I am talking about is the nomination of Senator Barack Obama as the first African-American to a major party.

I don’t care what side of the aisle you sit on or even if you sit on the fence. You have to admit that what happened last night, and even tonight with his acceptance speech, that it is great to finally see that race barrier starting to fall even more. Heck, even the fact that Senator Hillary Clinton had a serious run at it as well was also a great thing to see. You don’t have to like them to at least respect those things happening.

I honestly thought that the Republican Party would be the first to nominate an African-American candidate and not the Democratic Party. Not sure why, but just a feeling I always had.

I find it very fitting that Senator Barack Obama is accepting the nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, because it is a significant step towards seeing that dream achieved. I am looking forward to hearing Senator Barack Obama’s historic speech on this historic night, because as someone who still considers himself undecided I want to gather as much information as I can.

The sad part about all of this is how people are trying to use race as an issue in this election. What I respect about Senator Obama is that he has chosen to try and leave race out of it for the most part. I have yet to see him play the “race card” as some people have claimed him for doing. Mostly it is people looking for it or even race baiting, in my opinion.

What bothers me the most is that while people accuse Senator Obama for using the “race card” I see no one blaming Senator John McCain for using the “victim card”. I have really struggled with even blogging my thoughts about this and before I do let me say that I respect the sacrifice that Senator McCain has made for our nation. He suffered horrible things at the hands of his captors and served his country with pride.

However, if I have to hear him say one more story about his time as a POW, I think I may puke. I swear that during the Saddleback Civil Forum that he talked about his time as a POW after just about every question. Don’t get me wrong I respect his service to our country, but if Senator Obama can’t bring up his race, which has had a major influence in shaping his own life, then why should Senator McCain be allowed to bring up an experience that shaped his life ad nauseum? And someone else isn’t allowed to bring up theirs which just as much shaped their life and still continues to shape it to this day, because it is an ongoing experience. I know that people will label me “un-patriotic” or “un-American” and that just simply isn’t the truth. I am just merely pointing out that it should go both ways for both guys. The comment button is below so go ahead and fire away.

I have made no secret that I will not be voting for Senator John McCain. But I will change my mind if he declares that not only will he get rid of frivolous spending on things like studying the DNA of black bears in Montana, but that he will also not take a salary while he is President or make tax payers pay for the catering service in the White House or maid service or gas for Air Force One, etc. After all, the guy has a wife who is worth $100 million dollars and has more homes than some small countries. So I think he can afford to help out the country for 4 years by doing that. He will then have my vote. So, Senator McCain, if you are listening and want my vote then that is what you wil have to do to get it. Otherwise, you can keep on living in your myriad of homes and dream of living in the White House.

But for now I just want to focus on Senator Obama helping our country achieve the dream and shape history.

Paris Hilton Responds to John McCain

Gay Marriage

Category : Church, Life, Politics

That is a blog title that is sure to garner a lot of attention. It is a topic that is a hot button issue amongst Christians and even in the political world this year. With two states (California and Massachusetts) legalizing gay marriages it has caused all kinds of reactions. You have some churches that support gay marriages, some that oppose it and some churches that spew such vile about it that I don’t think that they can be considered Christian.

I have spent a lot of time thinking and talking about it, and trying to figure out where I stand on the issue. On one hand I read the Bible and I clearly see that the homosexual lifestyle is a sin, but then I also know that there are things I have done in my life that are sinful as well. God’s grace is big enough for both sins to be forgiven. However, that is not the issue at hand. The issue is whether or not our government, which is not a theocracy, should sanction gay marriages.

I am first and foremost against a federal law or Constitutional amendment that would define marriage as being between only one man and one woman. I think that it is an issue of state’s rights and not something that the federal government should step into.

Second, I believe that marriage is a sacramental act and something that is founded in biblical principles and so marriage should be kept within it’s biblical context and that is between a man and a woman. But where does that leave homosexual couples that feel that in this country they deserve the right to formalize their commitment? I believe the answer is to separate marriage and civil unions. Like I said marriage is a sacramental thing and should be kept within the context of the church. A civil union is a governmental thing and thus the federal government can regulate it. So homosexuals that want to formalize their union can get a license for a civil union that can be held in a courthouse or wherever they would prefer to conduct a ceremony. And then heterosexual couples can do the same thing and if it is performed in a church then it can be formalized as the sacramental marriage.

Now a church that chooses to bless homosexual unions can do so in a church that may approve of such a thing. However, by making the unions all civil unions and leaving marriage out of the picture then you will leave churches that do not believe in gay marriages to not be forced to perform those kind of ceremonies, because it won’t be required by the government for a marriage to take place for a union between a couple. Because I would be willing to bet if gay marriages were legalized in this country that it would not be very long before a church that opposes such a thing would be sued for discrimination. Thereby forcing homosexuals beliefs upon the church, which is pretty much what they feel churches are doing by rejecting their desire to be married.

There is more about this idea that was in Monday’s edition of the USA Today. You can read the full article here.

I know some people will not be pleased with what I have written and may even call my own faith into question, but let me just say that we need to realize that our government is not Christian and so we can not force it or it’s people to uphold our Christian ideals. Instead we as Christians need to be going about changing the hearts of people by showing them God’s love for them.

Wings Cheered, Mayor Booed

Category : Life, Politics, Sports

The Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup on 4 June 2008. And then the following Friday, 6 June 2008, they had the traditional parade in downtown Detroit that was attended by an estimated 1.4 million people. The police reported no problems and that a good time was had by all.

Sadly, when Kwame Kilpatrick (Detroit’s Mayor) took the stage he was booed by most of the people who were in attendance. You may not have heard about the scandal surrounding the mayor, but it is big news here in Michigan and people are not happy with him. So the people at the parade felt the need to boo him as a result. Detroit’s population numbers less than 1 million and you may have noticed that there was an estimated 1.4 million people there for this parade, which means there was more people there than live in the city. I would even venture to say that 90% or more of the people there do not have Detroit addresses.

So most of those people didn’t even elect Kwame into office and their boos really don’t mean much. But I find it very disrespectful for them to have booed him while he was trying to honor the Detroit Red Wings and their accomplishments on the ice. This was not a political speech and he was personally invited to be at the parade by the owner of the Detroit Red Wings, Mike Ilitch. People should have just respectfully listened to him honor the Wings and enjoyed the day. While they all have the freedom of speech, I as a Red Wings fan was disappointed in my fellow fans.

However, the mayor sure didn’t make a good choice himself. I was watching the coverage of the parade while I was at the gym and I could not hear the audio, so I was reading the closed captions. At the end of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s speech I noticed he said, “Since we are all here and you are having a good time the beer is on me.” I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that. Here is the mayor embroiled in a huge scandal over cheating on his wife with one of his main aides, facing perjury charges, paying hush money to people via city funds, having a huge party at the mayor’s mansion with strippers, then one of those strippers mysteriously being murdered, and now facing the possibility of being removed from office; and you are going to tell everyone that “the beer is on me”? What the heck was he thinking? Now is the time to do what you can to show yourself respectable and not look like a fool, but Kwame failed in those 5 words. You can see the video of the even below.

However, let’s not let this overshadow the tremendous accomplishments of the Detroit Red Wings. The 2008 Stanley Cup Champions! GO WINGS!!!

“Why Do We Have to Legislate Kindness?”

Category : Life, Politics

That was the line that got me in an article I read in the Detroit Free Press that was entitled State Won’t Answer Nature’s Call. Have you ever been in a store and had to use the bathroom really bad only to find out that they don’t have a public restroom? I am sure most of us has, but for most of us it isn’t such a big deal. However, if you are someone that suffers from Crohn’s Disease, which is a chronic, debilitating inflammation that makes a person’s bowels move suddenly and urgently, then it is a big deal. And for the woman in the story that is indeed an issue she has.

I won’t rehash the article here for you, but instead encourage you to read it for yourself. But I do want to emphasize that if you live here in the State of Michigan then I want to encourage you to talk with your state senator (you can find your’s here) to encourage them to pass Michigan House Bill 5046. You can also read more about it here. There is really no reason for businesses to not open up there bathrooms to people that suffer from this or other similar types of diseases. It is really sad that we have to legislate kindness.

What If Global Warming is a Hoax?

Category : Politics, Random

Much has been discussed about whether or not global warming is true. This is especially a hot topic in churches amongst Christians. With Al Gore’s advocacy of global warming, which led to him winning a Nobel Peace Prize, and his movie An Inconvenient Truth it has really pushed the issue to the forefront.

I don’t know if global warming is true or not, but I think that some of the good things that have come from the possible scare of it is good. What is wrong with consuming less or recycling or living more environmentally friendly? I know it flies in the face of our American way, but maybe it is time that we here in America stop being consumers and start caring about our planet a little bit more. Anyway, I saw this video a while back and thought it presented some interesting thoughts on this subject.

Gaseous Thoughts

Category : Life, Politics

I think most people in America would agree that gas prices have gotten ridiculous. All it takes to see the gas prices skyrocket upward is to have the price of oil go up and the oil companies/gas stations will tell us that even though what is in their tanks is the cheaper stuff that they will need to adjust their prices in preparation for the higher prices. Of course when the price of oil goes down they don’t lower it, because what is in their tanks is the more expensive stuff. And all the while the oil companies are putting up bigger and bigger profits. Gee, I wonder why?

Now I know that our European friends will gladly say that it is about time we experience the higher prices. In fact, I recently met with a friend of mine who lives in Ireland for lunch told me that very same thing. And in some ways I have to agree. I know that for me personally it has caused me to rethink my car buying decisions and gotten me to buy more economical cars, which in turn means my cars are greener than my previous cars. And I don’t plan on going back to buying any gas guzzlers even if the price of gas dropped back below a dollar a gallon again.

Now we are having a new alternative for gas with the E85 made from corn converted into ethanol. I think that the ethanol option is a good way to not only get us off of our dependency on foreign oil and will be a greener fuel, but I am not so sure that a food source is our best option for creating gas. Instead of paying farmers to grow corn so we can burn it in our cars why not pay them to grow corn so we can feed people instead that need food. I heard somewhere that the amount of corn it takes to fuel a SUV for one week with E85 is the same amount of corn it would take to feed someone for a year. Is corn the best option for ethanol?

I love editorial cartoons, because I think the give us a nugget of truth in a humorous way. Matt Davies is becoming my favorite editorial cartoonist. On 4 March 2008 He drew an editorial titled Against the Grain that you can see here.

Against the Grain

It really does make you think.

There are better ways to create ethanol than using a food source like corn kernels. Brazil has been using sawgrass and other plants to produce ethanol since 1975 and sawgrass makes a much better grade of ethanol that corn and can produce up to 7X more ethanol than corn kernels. (Article here) So I say we keep growing the corn but let’s give it to people who need food and make or ethanol from a non-food source.

Just some of my personal gaseous thoughts.

Political Thoughts

Category : Politics

I am happy to see that Mike Huckabee has finally dropped out of the race this past Tuesday, which is something he should have done several weeks ago when he had no chance of winning the nomination. Instead he insisted on wasting millions of dollars, because McCain hadn’t officially locked up the nomination. I guess Mike never took math because it was pointed out that if he had won every primary including the four this past Tuesday he would still have been about 200 delegates short. I wasn’t impressed with Mike before and I am even less impressed now. He should have ended his campaign when it was impossible for him to win and given the money to a charity or something.

Seriously, he wasted millions of dollars campaigning for nothing and even appeared on Saturday Night Live, which was mocking the fact that he could not possibly get the nomination and that he still was in the race. I just don’t understand his logic and I figured that a man who used to be a pastor would think about the waste of money and how it could be used for something so much better, like bringing clean water and basic sanitation to third world countries, or to help end hunger somewhere, etc. But instead he campaigned right through Tuesday and quit after McCain secured the nomination.

I first registered to vote in 1991 and my first Presidential election was in 1992 between George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and I voted for then President Bush. That was the first of several Republican Presidential candidates that I would vote for, I even registered as a Republican when I registered to vote.

With John McCain obtaining the nomination for the Republican party in the Presidential election I will for the first time in my voting history not be voting for a Republican candidate. I do not feel that John McCain has what it takes to be President of the United States, so I can not in good conscience vote for him. Plus, when I reflect on my list of the things I am looking for in the person to whom I want to be the next President I don’t see John McCain fulfilling enough of them to my satisfaction. In Michigan’s Primary I voted for Ron Paul, because I felt he was the best candidate that I could vote for.

So in this year’s election I will be looking for someone to vote for and cast a Presidential ballot for someone that is not a Republican. I will end up doing lots of research into third party candidates and if Barack Obama gets the Democrat’s nomination I will be looking into him as my possible choice.

Barack Obama Interview in Christianity Today

Category : Faith, Politics

Christianity Today did an interview with Presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama. You can read it here.

Just so everyone knows you can put to rest all of those stupid email rumors that he is a Muslim and refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance. In fact here are my simple rules for when you get an email forward….

1) Do not believe them.
2) Check it out on snopes.com or truthotfiction.com.
3) Do not forward it on if it is false.
4) Please erase all the “FWD”s in the subject line and erase all the “>”s in the email body along with all of the other email addresses of people who have gotten or sent it, before sending on any email forwards that you have first checked out to be 100% factual.

There is nothing more annoying than having your email inbox overrun with this kind of crap. And I beg every Christian out there to please make sure you do this, because these types of things just make Christians look foolish.

Anyway, enjoy the article and feel free to let me know what you think. I honestly am beginning to like this guy the more I read about him or hear from him.

I Will Be Happy When Today Ends

Category : Politics, TV

I am really getting sick of all the ads on TV, the phone calls, and the mailers. So I will be happy when today ends. I know it will all pick back up once the election in November kicks into high gear, but I feel like this primary has been going on since the beginning of last year. Speaking of the primary, I ended up voting for Ron Paul. Anyway, there needs to be a law passed that you can not campaign until a month before the date any election.

Speaking of laws….

There ought to be a law banning American Idol on TV, which is another reason why I will be happy when today is over with. Of course I know that it is only the start of that stupid TV show but a guy can dream, can’t he?
