Dear Coach Rod Marinelli

Category : Sports

As a Lions fan I am asking you to stop telling the team that “We’re not going 0-16″. The reason why I am asking you to stop doing this is because I wouldn’t mind seeing the Lions go 0-16 this year and become the laughing stock of the NFL, as if they already weren’t.

We Lions fans have not had much to look forward to since William Clay Ford, Sr. bought the team 45 years ago. The man has led the team with incompetence and given us only 13 winning seasons during that stretch and one playoff win. I want to see Ford publicly embarrassed with the notoriety of having the worst team and franchise in the history of the NFL and then hopefully he will sell the team, so we can have a new owner who wants to see a winning product on the field.

Besides all that Coach Rod the reality that you will be around next year as head coach of the Lions is not likely at all, so why not go out with a bang and lose them all. It is already an embarrassment to be a Lions fan, so why not at least let us glory in the pathetic-ness of our team and go 0-16? So please, for all the Lions fans out there, let the team lose the rest of the games. Especially today’s game which is pretty much the only game you might have a chance of winning.

Lions Jokes

Category : Sports

Since the Lions are a joke I figured I would post some Lions jokes a friend of mine posted on a forum I frequent. Hopefully, the Lions will not disappoint us fans and will go 0-16 this season, but that is another blog post for later. Enjoy the jokes for now.

Q. What do you call 47 millionaires around a TV watching the Super Bowl?
A. The Detroit Lions

Q. Where do you go in Detroit in case of a tornado?
A. To Ford Field – they never get a touchdown there!

Q. What do you call a Detroit Lion with a Super Bowl ring?
A. A thief

Q. Why doesn’t Grand Rapids have a professional football team?
A. Because then Detroit would want one.

Q. How do you keep a Detroit Lion out of your yard?
A. Put up goal posts.

Q. What’s the difference between the Detroit Lions and a dollar bill?
A. You can still get four quarters out of a dollar bill.

Q. How many Detroit Lions does it take to win a Super Bowl?
A. Nobody knows, and we may never find out.

Q. What do the Detroit Lions and possums have in common?
A. Both play dead at home and get killed on the road.

Q. What do the Detroit Lions and Billy Graham have in common?
A. They both can make 70,000 people stand up and yell “Jesus Christ.”

When you became the head football coach at Michigan everyone figured that you would do some amazing things with our team. After all, you were coming in with a new offensive system that was very different then the “three yards and a cloud of dust” mindset that Michigan had. So we expected change.

However, we didn’t expect the kind of change that we got. Things like more losses than ever in school history, the first losing season since 1967, the end of 33 straight bowl game appearances, the 2nd time ever that we lost to our three biggest rivals, the first time we ever lost 5 games in a row to that team down south, and the first time that we ever lost to a MAC Conference team. Those are some amazing things and they are definitely a change from what we are used to, but not exactly what we are looking for.

I said when Michigan hired you that you had the fans loyalty and I know that some have already turned their backs on you, but I won’t. I believe that you will turn things around. I also understand that you had lost a lot of offensive players from last year’s team, so there is grace. I know you won’t read this but I just want to be one positive voice out there saying that I do believe in you. You may be one of only two Michigan coaches to lose their first game against that team down south, but Harry Kipke did go on to win 4 Big Ten titles and 2 National Championships the next 4 years. No pressure.

The Game v.2008

Category : Sports

Today, is the 105th meeting between the Michigan Wolverines and that team down south. Michigan holds a 57-41-6 record over them, but have lost 6 of the last 7 against them and their coach. And it doesn’t look good for the boys in maize and blue today. I am just hoping that we will see a reminder of that great game back in 1969 when Bo Schembechler made his coaching debut at the University of Michigan.

40 Year Anniversary of the “Heidi Game”

Category : Sports

It was 40 years ago today that one of the biggest blunders in televised sports history took place. The infamous Heidi Game. On 17 November 1968 the New York Jets were playing at the Oakland Raiders. The Jets were up 32-29 with only 65 seconds left in the game when the NBC programmers made the decision to switch to the movie Heidi instead of delaying the broadcast until the end of the game. And the Oakland Raiders went on to score 14 points in those final 65 seconds and NBC fielded multiple calls from angry fans over the decision to switch from the game. That one incident changed how football is broadcasted on TV by the NFL instituting a rule that all football games must be shown in their entirety in the team’s market.

“All I want for Christmas is a 4-8 season for Michigan.”

While this season has been much worse than I ever thought it would or could be and I won’t be watching Michigan for the first time in pretty much my whole lifetime, a 4-8 finish wouldn’t be so bad. Unfortunately, I do not realistically see it happening. I am so far only correct on one of my predictions for this season, but being correct on two of them would be nice.

I would not call this season a disaster, but it is a failure. We need a new quarterback because I do think that Steven Threet or Nick Sheridan are the answer for the future of this program and I wish we could have seen more of Justin Feagin this season. No offense to Nick or Steven, I just don’t think that they are the right guys for the system.

I think Rich Rodriguez is a great coach and will turn the program into a success. He just didn’t have the personnel this year to get it done and did the best with what he had. I do not think he needs to be fired as some people are suggesting. It is just too early to be calling for his head, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

This week is the lead up to “The Game” and so let the fun begin. Unfortunately, Ohio State shouldn’t have too much to worry about this year.

And just for fun….

The Michigan Backyard Brawl

From http://www.bamaprints.com

Tomorrow is the big game here in the state of Michigan. It is when Michigan plays Michigan State. A lot was made out of some comments from last year’s game and it seemed to put a little bit more fire into this rivalry game that had seemed to lose it’s fervor. Although a lull in the rivalry is somewhat to be expected when your team boasts a 67-28-5 record, which is a .695 winning percentage, over their rival.

However, none of that really matters this year because Michigan has been playing horribly. Also if history plays out like normal Michigan will lose because we have a new coach and there has only been one time that a first year coach won this rivalry, which was when both teams had a first year coach. And so it looks like the Paul Bunyan-Governor of Michigan Trophy will be heading north to that school up there. Even though it is an ugly trophy I am sure the Sparty’s will take good care of it until we can bring it back home next year.

While I am not looking forward to all the Sparty fans and their comments that will be coming all year I can accept the reality that they are definitely the better team this year. I just hope Michigan can make it a competitive game and actually play all 4 quarters of this game. So let me go ahead and offer my congratulations to all the Spartan fans for their victory over my Michigan Wolverines.

70 Years of the Winged Helmet

Category : Sports

I was reading over at mvictors.com that today is the 70th anniversary of the winged helmet that was introduced to the University of Michigan by their legendary coach Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler, whom Crisler Arena is named after. Here is the story….

Michigan’s football helmet is surely one of the most instantly recognizable icons in college sports. The famous “winged” design dates from 1938 when Coach Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler arrived from Princeton to begin a new era in Michigan football. Even as the design and composition of helmets evolved from stitched cowhide to high-tech, molded plastic, the winged design has remained the pre-eminent symbol of Michigan football. Other Michigan athletic teams have adopted the winged design for their own headgear as well.

The distinctive helmet would also have practical advantages on the field. Crisler figured the helmet would help his quarterbacks find receivers downfield. “There was a tendency to use different colored helmets just for receivers in those days, but I always thought that would be as helpful for the defense as for the offense,” Crisler recalled.

In any event, the new helmet made a successful debut in the 1938 season opener against Michigan State. The Wolverines defeated the Spartans 14-0 behind two touchdown runs by sophomore Paul Kromer to gain their first win over Michigan State in four years.

Those famous helmets has helped Michigan land many football recruits and has remained one of the distinctive features of the University of Michigan athletic program with many of the other sports teams taking on the winged helmet design. Along with the Big House it is a proud tradition in Ann Arbor.

There is only one other university in Division 1 football that wears the winged helmet and that is the University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens.

A big thank you to Fritz Crisler for bringing a great uniqueness to the University of Michigan along with the forward pass.

HE’S BACK!!!

I just heard on the news that Lance Armstrong has decided to make a comeback. VeloNews has an article about it here. This is such great news for cycling and for me as a fan. I have always respected Lance and thought that he brought a level of integrity to the sport that it needed. Lance has said that he will even post his blood results on the internet for everyone to see that he is clean and he is not doing this for money, but for the joy of cycling. All I can say is…. “GO, LANCE, GO!” I can’t wait to see him in le Tour de France again and wearing the maillot jaune once again.

Michigan 2008 Football Season Predictions

Category : Sports

Nothing major, just some thoughts of what I think may happen this year. Michigan will definitely finish above .500 and go to a bowl game and keep their consecutive bowl game streak alive. The will lose to that team up north, but they will beat that team down south. No reason why I think this other than just a gut feeling. I hope I am wrong on at least one of the predictions, can you guess which one?
