Verizon is Stupid

Category : Tech

I just saw this video on the Macworld website and it makes me sad. I was really hoping that come June when Apple’s contract with AT&T ran out that Verizon would get in on the iPhone. But, sadly, with this commercial I think that they have now shut the door on that possibility.

I just don’t get why Verizon would take aim at one of the best selling smartphones on the market when they are so close to being able to get it for themselves. I had heard from people that it looked like a done deal with Verizon getting the iPhone, so I was very hopeful and counting down the days until I could get an iPhone on the Verizon network. I love my Verizon mobile phone service, but this will just now cause me to want to walk away from them when my contract ends.

Can someone at Verizon explain to me the logic behind this stupid move? I think that this will end up hurting Verizon in the long run.

WWDC 2009

Category : Tech

geekApple had the Worldwide Developers Conference this week and made some pretty sweet announcements. On Monday, I watched some of the live blog coverage on MacRumorsLive.com and then that evening I watched the video of it that Apple posted. I guess that makes me a geek.

Anyway, I was excited by a couple of their announcements. The first one was about the release of Snow Leopard. Apple is taking what is already one of the best operating systems out there and making it even better. Not only that but they are going to do it for only a $29 upgrade cost ($49 for a family pack). It doesn’t stop there, this is sounding like an infomercial, because when you upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard you will also gain 6GB of hard drive space! That is really unusual for an OS upgrade. I would love to see Microsoft even come close to doing either of those things with Windows 7. However, I doubt they will because they just seem to keep sliding further and further away from producing a quality OS.

Then I was really excited about the new MacBook Pro lineup. Especially with them making the 13″ MacBook into the Pro lineup and lowering the price. Apple is really doing a great job of lowering their price point so that they can grab an even bigger market share.

The new iPhone OS 3.0 is exciting as well. There isn’t a ton of extra features for the iPod Touch (Note: it is NOT an iTouch), but it will still be a very nice upgrade. I would love to be able to one day get an iPhone. However, I will probably wait until they are free from AT&T and available on the Verizon network. I love U-verse but I have not really been a fan of AT&T’s wireless service, so I will be excited to see what happens next year when Apple’s contract with AT&T ends.

I am looking forward to checking out some of these new tings that Apple is going to be introducing in the next week and coming months.

Twouble with Twitters

Category : Tech

I just saw this video and I had to re-post it here on my blog. I am a Tweeter (or is it Twitterer?) and I found this video hysterical. If you can’t laugh at yourself, then who can you laugh at?

Tweet Revenge

Category : Tech, TV

Twitter is becoming a really powerful tool and is beginning to influence the way companies do business. A lot of companies have people that do searches via Google to scour blogs and see what people are saying about their companies and now they are even including Twitter in that as well. Image is everything and if people have a negative image of your company and are badmouthing your customer service, product line or commercials via the blogosphere or in the Twitterverse that can really ruin a companies image. Especially in this economy.

Motrin recently experienced this with a recent ad campaign that they had and have now pulled. One of my friends blogged about it and expressed her opinion for the ad and how it showed bad judgment on Motrin’s part. And people on Twitter also talked about it so much so that it caused Motrin to pull the ad and issue and apology that as of today you can still see on the front page of their website. The USA Today had an article about week ago that talked about how “Moms offended by Motrin ad get tweet revenge through Twitter”. You can still find the ad on YouTube, which is another powerful tool that is influencing companies decisions. I am sure they will be getting the people at YouTube to pull all remnants of this ad, but for now it is still there. You can see it below.

Isn’t She Cute?

Category : Life, Tech

Would you like to buy her?

This is our very cute Silkchon (yes, the picture on that site is of our dog), named Zoey. And the reason why I am selling her is because I need to so I can buy a new computer. Now before you think I am cruel let me tell you why.

On Thursday my wife told me that our “cute” little Zoey had gotten a “little” wound up and ended getting her leg caught in the power cord of my 5 year old 800 MHz G4 iBook and knocked it down. When I got home I tried to boot it up and while I could hear the hard drive working there was nothing showing up on the monitor. I then tried to connect an external monitor and still nothing showed up. I am pretty sure that the video card is shot along with the monitor on the laptop.

Now you can see why I need to sell her (I really am not planning on selling her), so that I can get some money to buy a new laptop. I was in need of a new laptop since mine was getting up there in years, but I wasn’t planning on getting a new one since the iBook was still working fine. So over the weekend we ended up ordering a refurbished MacBook from the Apple Store. Let me tell you that it is worth checking the refurbished section of the Apple Store for Apple products, because you can save money and get the same great Apple products along with their warranty.

So later this week I will go from a 800 MHz G4 iBook with a ComboDrive (CD burner/DVD reader), 768 MB of RAM, and a 60 GB hard drive to a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook with a SuperDrive (CD & DVD Burner), 2 GB of RAM and a 160 GB hard drive. It will be nice to have the extra power to do some things faster that took a bit of time on my old laptop, but I really didn’t want to have to spend the extra money. But I still love my cute dog, I think?

Mobile Phone Madness

Category : Life, Tech

SoapboxI have some serious issues with the way people use their mobile phones. And so allow me to pull out my soap box and give a few ideas of what I believe is proper mobile phone etiquette. These are just a few things that I personally follow and that I think would be good for other people to follow as well.

The first thing involves when and when not to answer calls.

1) When you are in a store it is perfectly acceptable to answer and take phone calls. However, make sure you are finished with the conversation or end it early when you get up to the checkout counter. I can’t imagine how much this must annoy cashiers. I know that it annoys me.

2) When you are out with a friend and your phone rings, politely check to see who it is and if it is your place of employment or your significant other than I believe it is acceptable to answer the call. Otherwise, let them leave you a voice mail. When you answer that call you are telling that person you are with that they are not important at all. And the reality is that your wife/husband or employer is more important than that person. I never answer my phone unless it is my wife calling me.

3) When you are meeting with someone and you get a call before you walk into that meeting end it before you meet with them or go inside. I have had meetings with people and they walked in talking on their phone and never even acknowledged me beyond a head nod until about 10-15 minutes later. You can imagine how important that made me feel.

4) When you are exercising at the gym you really do not need you mobile phone with you unless it also doubles as an iPod/mp3 player and you have the phone function turned off. You are there to get exercise not talk with your friends while you are on the elliptical, riding the bike or lifting weights. Which leads to my second part….

Bluetooth devices.

1) When you are at the gym not only do you not need the phone, but you also do not need the bluetooth. I saw a guy at the gym a few weeks ago lifting weights while chatting on his phone via his bluetooth.

Bluetooth Idiot2) Trust me on this one. When you walk around with the bluetooth in your ear, you do not look cool. You look utterly ridiculous. If you are driving in your car then they are a good thing otherwise take it out of your ear. I saw a guy that was out to eat with his family and he was chatting on his bluetooth the whole time. I guess his family wasn’t that important, not too mention that he looked like a fool with that stupid bluetooth in his ear.

Seriously, when did bluetooth devices become fashion accessories? I want to slap them out of the ears of every person I see walking around with one. I just don’t get it.

Okay, I will put my soapbox away now.

New Blog Look

Snuffy Blog PreviewI am trying out a new look for my blog. Let me know what you think about it. And if you are having any issues with it please let me know also, so I can hopefully get them corrected.

Over and Under 200

Category : Life, Tech

Since I moved my blog over to WordPress from Blogger about 5 months ago, I have had 241 spam comments caught by Akismet. If you don’t have Akismet installed on your blog then you are missing out on one of the coolest tools for blogging. It is so nice to know that Akismet is there doing it’s job and preventing my blog from being inundated with spam. And for some reason a majority of come on my blog post Amazing Grace (Not A Movie Review) for whatever reason. That is the over 200.

The under 200 is how much I weigh, which I probably have not been under 200 in 10 years. About 4 years ago I weighed 265 and went on the Atkins diet and lost 55 pounds. I then went back up to 235 about a year or so later and maintained right around there. Then back in August Kimmy and I got a membership at World Gym and we started eating better. I began to shed some weight due to the fact that I go to the gym 5 days a week for about 1.5-2 hours per day. So between that and eating better I have now gone below 200 pounds. I really do not have a goal weight that I am shooting for, but I am enjoying the fact that I now wear the same size jeans that I did in high school. I also enjoy working out and being able to run at least 2 miles on the treadmill everyday at the gym. So life is good.

Do You Tweet?

Category : Tech

Twitter
Twitter is a fairly new Web 2.0 service from Evan Williams, who also created Blogger one of the biggest blogging tools before he sold it to Google. Twitter is in essence a mini-blog. You post updates of what you are doing to Twitter from your mobile phone, from the site itself or any other extra program for your computer.

I have been using Twitter since November when my friend, Adam, told me about it. You can find my Tweets, that is what they call your Twitter posts, here. I also have the RSS feed from my Twitter page posted in the right column here on my blog. And if you are a fellow Twitterer post a link to yours in the comments section below.

There was an interesting article about Evan Williams in Inc. Magazine that you can read here.

Three T’s

Category : Random, Sports, Tech, TV

The first “t” is that I am tired. On Friday we had a youth staff retreat and we stayed up late playing games. So on Friday I woke up at 4:30a for work and then I went to bed at 3:30a that night. I was only awake for 23 hours. But I did manage to get 5 hours of sleep. And then of course last night I stayed up late to watch House after the Super Bowl and then had to get up at 4:30a for work. I was tired all day but I still went to the gym and worked out and then came home and took a nap.

The second “t” is for Twitter. I am just curious if anyone who read this blog Twitters. If you do post a comment and link me to your Twitter page. My Twitter page can be found here. It is a fun little site where you can update what you are doing throughout the day either by text or directly on the site itself, and then follow other friend’s “Tweets”.

The third “t” is for our new TV. On Thursday, Kimmy’s birthday, we got our Federal tax refund back and so we went out and bought an HDTV. We ended up getting a Sam’s Club. It is not the fanciest or largest, but it is perfect for our entertainment center and the price was good. Vizio is a very good brand of HDTV. We got the TV home just in time to take it out of the box, plug it in and watch Lost in HD. How sweet is that?

I even called up AT&T to get my U-Verse upgraded to receive the HD programs and they were able to connect it right over the phone in 5 minutes. Then it is supposed to cost $10 more a month, but they gave it to us free for a year. I also connected a old set of rabbit ears to the TV so I can get the HD on my picture in picture. If you have a HDTV do not believe the stores that say you have to have a set of digital antennas to receive the HD signal. Any set of antennas will pick it up, but I do recommend getting a powered set.

I love out HDTV. I only wish that the Super Bowls outcome came out better in HD then it did. But I do have to congratulate the Manning brothers for winning back to back Super Bowls. That is impressive.
