Questions for us “Old Farts”…

Category : Fun

Tired of all of those surveys made up by high school kids? Here’s questions for the people who are a little older…

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
My home mortgage, because I am paying on a home that is 1/3 less than when we bought it. I feel like I am just throwing away my money. :(

2. Do you miss being a child?
I still act immature enough to not miss it, but I do miss being in high school.

3. Chore you hate the most?
Shoveling snow. I am so sick of winter.

4. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
Red Robin. Our last attempt at a date didn’t happen, because my daughter became ill.

5. If you could go back and change one thing what would it be?
Over using credit cards when we were first married.

6. Name of your first grade teacher?
Mrs. Zawislak (sp?), I think? It was about 30 years ago.

7. What do you really want to be doing right now?
Living someplace that has no snow ever.

8. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a Mack truck driver.

9. How many colleges did you attend?
1 – Elim Bible Institute

10. Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now?
It is one of my running shirts and I am going to go for a run after this.

11. What are your thoughts on gas prices?
I don’t like the high prices, so I sold my Jeep Wrangler a few years back and bought a more fuel efficient car. I say let the prices keep going up, especially if it is going to force more people to start getting more fuel efficient cars so we emit less pollutants into the air.

12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
I need to get my wife up, so she can go to work.

13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I hope I can get a job as a youth pastor soon.

14. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
I have a couple: Bo Schembechler (sadly, I can’t because he is dead), Doug Fields, Donald Miller, Erwin McManus, and Rob Bell

15. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
Nope.

16. If you didn’t have to work, would you volunteer?
Heck yeah! I have been doing a lot more stuff at my church since I have been an unemployed bum.

17. Get up early or sleep in?
Sleep in. I prefer the night life.

18. What is your favorite cartoon character?
SpongeBob Squarepants

19. Favorite thing to do at night with a guy/girl?
I am married, so you can guess.

20. When did you first start feeling old (but never too old for this $#!@)?
I don’t. I actually feel like I am in the best shape of my life. I run all the time, work out and I am hoping to compete in a mini-triathlon this year.

21. Favorite lunch meat?
Turkey

22. What do you get every time you go into Wal-Mart?
Vitamins, Kashi cereal, or rice milk.

23. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
No way! Marriage is great.

24. Favorite movie you wouldn’t want anyone to find out about?
I really don’t care and I tell people that “Somewhere in Time” is my favorite movie all the time. Yes, it is a chick flick. That is how I roll.

25. What’s your favorite drink?
New Castle Brown Ale and water, but not mixed together.

26. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?
96.3 WDVD, but I mainly listen to podcasts from different churches Sunday services. Yes, I know that makes me a nerd. Sadly, my iPod that I have had for almost 5 years has died, so I am taking donations from anyone who want to help me buy a new one. :D

27. Do you like the person that sits directly across from you at work?
I don’t have a job.

28. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purposes?
Nope.

29. Last book you finished reading?
Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan

30. Do you have a teddy bear?
Yes, my Aunt Diana made it for me and then made another one just like it when my daughter was born. Mine is made from green corduroy and my wife entered it into an ugly bear competition when we were first married.

31. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth?
Over a campfire.

32. Do you go to church?
Yes. Church may not be perfect, but neither are any of us.

33. How old are you?
36

The Game v.2008

Category : Sports

Today, is the 105th meeting between the Michigan Wolverines and that team down south. Michigan holds a 57-41-6 record over them, but have lost 6 of the last 7 against them and their coach. And it doesn’t look good for the boys in maize and blue today. I am just hoping that we will see a reminder of that great game back in 1969 when Bo Schembechler made his coaching debut at the University of Michigan.

My Favorite Time of Year

Category : Sports

I love summer and the heat that comes with it, especially 90 degree summer days. And while I am sad to have the summer end and have to bust out the winter clothes, I am excited to have college football starting back up. You may have noticed that I changed the header on my blog to reflect my favorite college football team.

Some of the best parts of college football, and really all college sports, are the rivalries. I love going to games and seeing the fans wearing their respective teams colors while cheering on their team. You just don’t get that same feeling with pro sports.

Plus, the guys on the field are playing for the love of the game more than the paycheck, which is another thing that annoys me about pro football. Of course, there is the fact that I am a Detroit Lions fan and that probably adds to my disdain for pro football. LOL

My wife is not looking forward to it, because that means that the TV will be on some college football game all day Saturday. Starting with College Gameday on ESPN. And the best part is that this year I get to watch Michigan play in HD, along with the myriad of other games that I will watch.

This season at Michigan will bring with it a new challenge because we have a new coach. And while I am not happy about the circumstances surrounding him leaving his previous school, I would be a fool to not say that I am not excited about what Coach Rod will do with the boys in the winged helmet. Hopefully, he can repeat the success of Bo Schembechler in his first season at Michigan and beat the bucks. All we need to do is take a page from the SEC.

Congratulations to Les Miles and LSU

Category : Sports

Les WinsOnce again the SEC is the dominant conference in college football. While I am happy that they beat the Buckeyes, I hate the fact that it just shows that the Big 10 needs to make some changes to compete. I think the hiring of Rich Rodriguez at Michigan is a big step forward.

I honestly do feel bad for the Buckeye fans because this makes 3 National Championship in a row that they have lost. And as much I dislike them I know it is tough and so I do feel for the athletes and fans. Even though I never liked the Buffalo Bills I felt bad for them when they lost 4 Super Bowls in a row.

But my hat off to Les Miles and his LSU Tigers for winning the National Championship game. They played with class and pride, which I would not expect anything less from a team coached by a Michigan man. It was no secret that I wanted Les as the head coach at Michigan and that I was not happy when he didn’t take the job. I even made the comment that his true colors were green and not maize and blue. I want to take that back. I read an article in the USA Today and when I came to this quote I realized how wrong I was.

“The timing just wasn’t there,” his wife said. “He put the team first, even in front of what may have been a professional dream of his, because this is such a great team and a great program. There was no way he was going to do anything to jeopardize anything these kids have put forth.

“From the time they started mentioning his name for the Michigan job, he said nothing would interfere with this team until the last second goes off the clock on whatever the last game is. The thing he learned from Bo Schembechler was the team, the team, the team.

Les was simply doing what it is that Bo had taught him. He was truly being a Michigan man by staying and caring about “the team, the team, the team”, which was Bo’s mantra. Thank you, Les, for being a true Michigan man. I am sad you are not here, but I am happy to know you are staying true to the ideals of a Michigan man.
