Simon Says > Jesus Says I saw this video from Francis Chan about making disciples and it really hits home when he compares how most of us have all played "Simon Says" as a kid, but yet we think that when Jesus says all we need...

What A Ride

Category : Church, Faith, Student Ministry

Life has been very crazy for me lately, but it has been a good kind of crazy. My daughter graduated from 6th grade, which means she is now a part of the youth ministry at our church. I have waited for this day since she was born. People told me that I was nuts to be excited about my kids becoming teenagers, but when that is the age group you work with it makes perfect sense because you know how to relate with them.

HannahDadMilleniumForceSo her first big youth trip was Rockpointe’s annual trip to America’s Roller Coast known as Cedar Point. We had so much fun together and I loved seeing her hanging out with the teens. As you can tell by the picture she pushed herself and rode one of the big coasters with her dad called the Millenium Force. It was a really great day.

During some of this time I went down to a church near Cincinnati, OH to interview for their open youth pastor position. Most of you know that I have been looking for a full-time youth pastor position since I graduated from Bible college in 1999. And have been looking to get back into some form of a paid youth pastor position since I left the church I was a part-time youth pastor at in March of 2005. It has been a long journey only to be added to when I got laid off in the middle of January from the factory job I had. So going for an interview was a very nice thing, but I really didn’t expect to get the job, because we had been on interviews for youth pastor positions a couple of times before.

I was really shocked when they called us back down for a second interview and was even more shocked when I was told that I was the only on being invited back down. So we made arrangements to go back down the last weekend in June, which threw a wrench into our annual 4th of July trip up to Manistee, MI. We adjusted our arrival dates with the campground and figured we would just take a day off to rest in between driving 4 hours south to Cincy and then 4 hours north to Manistee.

While we were down for the interview we fell more and more in love with the church and the people there. And they seemed to like us as well. We came back home with a good feeling about this one, but we had good feelings about other ones as well so we were cautiously optimistic.

The pastor had said that we would probably hear something back before he left for his trip to Haiti, which was Friday (July 3rd). However, I told people that we wouldn’t hear back until he came back on July 14th so we didn’t have to hear the constant barrage of questions if we “had heard anything yet”.

Yesterday I heard back from them and I am in negotiations to be the youth pastor at The River Church in Liberty Township, OH. I am very excited to be finally getting back into “the game” and can not wait to get down there.

We do not know exactly when we will be heading down there, but hope to be down there either the first or second week of August. The schools down there start a lot earlier than schools here in Michigan, so we want to get down there and get the kids settled in before school starts.

There are only two sad things in all of this. One is leaving all of our family, friends and loved ones here in Michigan. But we are only 4 hours south and we will be real close to Kings Island, so you are welcome to come visit. However, we will be home from time to time visiting family. The other sad thing is that I will be living in enemy territory with all of those Buckeyes, but they need Jesus too!

Lastly, I want to leave you with this video of Mike Yaconelli. I think it speaks perfectly to what I am getting into. Watch out River Church! It is going to be a fun ride! I can’t wait!!!

Boblo Island

Category : Fun

Boblo IslandThat picture to the right brings back so many great memories of times spent riding a boat down the Detroit River to what was Southeast Michigan’s amusement park, Boblo Island. I can remember how much fun it was to wait on the docks to board that massive steamboat. The dreams and thoughts of what was going to happen and what adventures we would have danced through my head. Not to mention the smallness you felt as you would begin to walk the plank to board the boat realizing what an amazing time you were going to have as you traversed the river to get to the island. To me one of the best parts about the park was the boat ride there.

The boat had so many things to do. They had a concession stand, souvenir store, dancing area or you could just hang over the railing. I would spend a lot of my time hanging over the railing chatting with my friends and watching the water zip by below us. There was even a time when we were on our 6th grade Boblo Island class trip that I saw a girl a couple of decks below and so I started yelling down to her. We ended up meeting on one of the decks and spent the day together on the island. Yep, I had a Boblo Island romance.

There were also some really great memories of the amusement park. I loved when the boat docked there and everyone would pile off the boat and head down that long, covered walkway and off into the wonderland of Boblo. There were so many great adventures and rides that awaited. It was at Boblo that I found my love for roller coasters. They didn’t have the most spectacular roller coasters like Cedar Point, but the ones they had were pretty cool.

I can remember the first time I was going to go on the Rotor, which was a ride that spun around in a circle so fast that it would pin you up against the wall and then the floor would drop out from underneath you. I was really afraid to go on but my friends had talked me into doing and I didn’t want to seem like a coward, so I agreed. As we were standing there looking down at the people who were on it and waiting our turn, I noticed that one guy didn’t look so good. Sure enough as the ride came to a slow and he could free himself from the wall he hurled all over the floor. I guess that candied apple he had didn’t fully get down. ;)

Boblo 1987 MapI could go on and on about my memories of Boblo, but I won’t. So why don’t you leave some of your own and tell us what you remember from your trips to Boblo. To help refresh your memory here is a brochure from 1987 that has a map of the park.

Here is a video I found on YouTube that was a documentary someone did about the island recently. If you did not already know it is going to be turned into a marina resort community. I may ask my dad if he would mind taking me for a boat ride down to the island just for one last look before it is all completely gone.

2008 Cedar Point Reflections

Category : Fun, Life

I had such a blast at Cedar Point, but of course I have a blast every year. It is one of my favorite youth group traditions. Cedar Point is one of the best amusement parks in the country and having the most roller coasters makes it even better. I didn’t get to ride the Top Thrill Dragster, but I did get to ride the Blue Streak for the last ride of the day, which has been a tradition of mine since I used to go to Cedar Point with my best friend when we were kids.

For dinner we went to Johnny Rockets and if you ever been to a Johnny Rockets before you will know that it is a 50′s style diner and that they will crank up the music and the waiters and waitresses will do a choreographed dance. Well, aXiom’s very own Tom Henry jumped up and danced along with them to the Car Wash song and I captured it on my LG enV. You can see the video here….

But before that we had started a conversation about drivers license photos, so I pulled mine out. I have hardly ever looked at it since I got it taken, so I was shocked when I looked at it. I showed the girls at my table and they were shocked as well. One girl said that it looked like me 2,000 pounds ago, but it was actually about 50+ pounds ago. I posted the picture here along with a current one of myself, so you can compare them. I must add that it was so nice to be able to fit into the seats on the roller coaster much easier than last year.

It really is amazing to me when I look back at old pictures of myself. When you are losing the weight it is a slow progression, so you don’t realize it as much. But it is nice seeing little reminders like this, because it reminds you of where you do not want to be again.
