Questions for us “Old Farts”…

Category : Fun

Tired of all of those surveys made up by high school kids? Here’s questions for the people who are a little older…

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
My home mortgage, because I am paying on a home that is 1/3 less than when we bought it. I feel like I am just throwing away my money. :(

2. Do you miss being a child?
I still act immature enough to not miss it, but I do miss being in high school.

3. Chore you hate the most?
Shoveling snow. I am so sick of winter.

4. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
Red Robin. Our last attempt at a date didn’t happen, because my daughter became ill.

5. If you could go back and change one thing what would it be?
Over using credit cards when we were first married.

6. Name of your first grade teacher?
Mrs. Zawislak (sp?), I think? It was about 30 years ago.

7. What do you really want to be doing right now?
Living someplace that has no snow ever.

8. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a Mack truck driver.

9. How many colleges did you attend?
1 – Elim Bible Institute

10. Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now?
It is one of my running shirts and I am going to go for a run after this.

11. What are your thoughts on gas prices?
I don’t like the high prices, so I sold my Jeep Wrangler a few years back and bought a more fuel efficient car. I say let the prices keep going up, especially if it is going to force more people to start getting more fuel efficient cars so we emit less pollutants into the air.

12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
I need to get my wife up, so she can go to work.

13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I hope I can get a job as a youth pastor soon.

14. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
I have a couple: Bo Schembechler (sadly, I can’t because he is dead), Doug Fields, Donald Miller, Erwin McManus, and Rob Bell

15. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
Nope.

16. If you didn’t have to work, would you volunteer?
Heck yeah! I have been doing a lot more stuff at my church since I have been an unemployed bum.

17. Get up early or sleep in?
Sleep in. I prefer the night life.

18. What is your favorite cartoon character?
SpongeBob Squarepants

19. Favorite thing to do at night with a guy/girl?
I am married, so you can guess.

20. When did you first start feeling old (but never too old for this $#!@)?
I don’t. I actually feel like I am in the best shape of my life. I run all the time, work out and I am hoping to compete in a mini-triathlon this year.

21. Favorite lunch meat?
Turkey

22. What do you get every time you go into Wal-Mart?
Vitamins, Kashi cereal, or rice milk.

23. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
No way! Marriage is great.

24. Favorite movie you wouldn’t want anyone to find out about?
I really don’t care and I tell people that “Somewhere in Time” is my favorite movie all the time. Yes, it is a chick flick. That is how I roll.

25. What’s your favorite drink?
New Castle Brown Ale and water, but not mixed together.

26. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?
96.3 WDVD, but I mainly listen to podcasts from different churches Sunday services. Yes, I know that makes me a nerd. Sadly, my iPod that I have had for almost 5 years has died, so I am taking donations from anyone who want to help me buy a new one. :D

27. Do you like the person that sits directly across from you at work?
I don’t have a job.

28. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purposes?
Nope.

29. Last book you finished reading?
Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan

30. Do you have a teddy bear?
Yes, my Aunt Diana made it for me and then made another one just like it when my daughter was born. Mine is made from green corduroy and my wife entered it into an ugly bear competition when we were first married.

31. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth?
Over a campfire.

32. Do you go to church?
Yes. Church may not be perfect, but neither are any of us.

Baby ToddIt was a Sunday morning 36 years ago and my mom was getting ready to go to church, but I had other plans for her. Instead I wanted to come out and see what all of this hub bub was about. I could hear all these strange sounds and plus I was getting pretty tired of being in the same dark place, so I started making my way out.

It is really hard to believe that 36 years of my life has come and gone. There has been many crazy things that have happened, but I would not change a single one of them for a second. Each moment of my life has been God ordained and has been used to shape me into the man that I am today. I am truly grateful for each moment.

For 13 years of my life I have had the privilege and honor of being married to my beautiful wife, Kimmy, whom I have had 2 wonderful children with. I can honestly say that those 13 years have been the best portion of my life thus far and I know that it will only get better. I look forward to when I have spent a majority of my life with her then I would have had as a single man.

I have gone through many changes physically in my appearance. I was a skinny awkward kid growing up that had way too much energy. I grew into a skinny teenager that did his best to be cool, but failed in many ways. I played football in junior high and then chose to pursue drama in my senior high years. I went from flattop haircuts to growing my hair out long to having the words “WHS Class of 1991″ carved in my head for my graduation.

When I was 17 years old I got my ear pierced and have worn it continuously except for the years when I was in Bible college and couldn’t wear it. (Although I would wear it when I was sleeping or at work. Just don’t tell anyone. :) )

When I graduated from college I decided that I wanted to grow my hair out again, so I began to let it grow until 2000 (6 years). It eventually got down to the middle of my back and then one day I woke up and asked my wife if she wanted to cut my hair. She totally freaked out but did it anyway.

I got my first tattoo when I graduated from Bible college as a gift from my brother. I eventually got another one about 7 or 8 years later and then added to the original one a few years after that. And I prefer to look at them as the stained glass windows on my temple. :)

BaptismsI have served as a youth pastor for 6 years and can’t think of another career that I would ever want to have again. It was a great 6 years and I hope to find another church where I can be a youth pastor and invest my life in the lives of teenagers. To me there is nothing cooler than being able to see a teenager make a choice to do something very profound with their lives and to no longer live for themselves, but instead chose to love God and love others.

I have also gone through many body changes. I at one point ballooned out to about 265 pounds only to decide a few years ago that I had enough and after getting a gym membership, I started eating better and exercising. I went on to drop down to 195 pounds and fit into the same size clothes that I wore when I graduated from high school. I was indeed a big loser. The best part about it all though is that I feel like I am in the best condition of my life. I have run several 5K’s and am looking to possibly running a 10K this year and maybe even participating in a mini-triathlon. So I may be 36, but I certainly don’t feel it.

Here’s to my first 36 years and hopefully another 36+ more years of good living.

Things That Make You Go Hmmm….

Category : Church

I had a teacher at my Bible college that told us if you can’t say “amen”, say “ouch” instead. This one kind of makes me say “ouch”. It is a quote from John Wimber.

Years ago in New York City, I got into a taxi cab with an Iranian taxi driver, who could hardly speak English. I tried to explain to him where I wanted to go, and as he was pulling his car out of the parking place, he almost got hit by a van that on its side had a sign reading The Pentecostal Church. He got real upset and said, “That guy’s drunk.” I said, “No, he’s a Pentecostal. Drunk in the spirit, maybe, but not with wine.” He asked, “Do you know about church?” I said, “Well, I know a little bit about it; what do you know?” It was a long trip from one end of Manhattan to the other, and all the way down he told me one horror story after another that he’d heard about the church. He knew about the pastor that ran off with the choir master’s wife, the couple that had burned the church down and collected the insurance—every horrible thing you could imagine. We finally get to where we were going, I paid him, and as we’re standing there on the landing I gave him an extra-large tip. He got a suspicious look in his eyes—he’d been around, you know. I said, “Answer me this one question.” Now keep in mind, I’m planning on witnessing to him. “If there was a God and he had a church, what would it be like?” He sat there for awhile making up his mind to play or not. Finally he sighed and said, “Well, if there was a God and he had a church—they would care for the poor, heal the sick, and they wouldn’t charge you money to teach you the Book.” I turned around and it was like an explosion in my chest. “Oh, God.” I just cried, I couldn’t help it. I thought, “Oh Lord, they know. The world knows what it’s supposed to be like. The only ones that don’t know are the Church.”

When you joined the kingdom, you expected to be used of God. I’ve talked to thousands of people, and almost everybody has said, “When I signed up, I knew that caring for the poor was part of it—I just kind of got weaned off of it, because no one else was doing it.” Folks, I’m not saying, “Do some-thing heroic.” I’m not saying, “Take on some high standard, sell everything you have and go.” Now, if Jesus tells you that, that’s different. But I’m not saying that. I’m just saying, participate. Give some portion of what you have—time, energy, money, on a regular basis—to this purpose, to redeeming people, to caring for people. Share your heart and life with somebody that’s not easy to sit in the same car with. Are you hearing me? That’s where you’ll really see the kingdom of God.

It really makes you think that maybe churches need to look at what they are doing and consider what kind of image we are portraying. I was talking with my parent’s the other day and they were talking about a couple of churches that would hand women shawls if they came in with short sleeves on, granted that was many years ago. But I know of two friends who attended the same church (at separate times) not too many years ago and were asked to leave because of their appearance.

The first friend had decided that it was time to get his life right with God and so he decided to start attending church, so after getting off of work on a Sunday morning he went to a large church in my area. When he went in he was met at the door by an usher and told that he needed to go home and shower and change before he could come into the service.

The other friend had just had major surgery on his brain and decided that going to church to thank God for saving his life was something he wanted to do, so he walks into the same church wearing a hat to hide his scar. He finds a seat and as the service is starting he is approached by an usher and told that he needs to remove his hat. My friend explained to the usher that he had just had surgery on his brain and he did not want to remove his hat because the scar was ugly looking and he did not want to freak anyone out. The usher told him if he did not remove his hat that he had to leave. So my friend left.

Now fortunately the first friend decided that his desire for God was greater than the rejection that church gave him, but the other friend has no desire to ever walk into another church building again. However, I am doing my best to hopefully show him that is not the reality of what church is supposed to be.

It does make you think about what it is we do as churches that causes barriers between people and God. Is it a dress code? Is it a style? What is it that may be causing your church to turn people off to Christ rather than on to Him? I heard Mosaic’s podcast recently where Erwin McManus was talking about how someone said they would never put their faith in God, because they could not forgive their father for things they have done to them. And someone told them that they can’t forgive their father unless they can accept God’s forgiveness for them. In other words, you don’t come to God because you are all cleaned up, but after you come to God he will clean you up.

HT to Marko.
