70 Years of the Winged Helmet

Category : Sports

I was reading over at mvictors.com that today is the 70th anniversary of the winged helmet that was introduced to the University of Michigan by their legendary coach Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler, whom Crisler Arena is named after. Here is the story….

Michigan’s football helmet is surely one of the most instantly recognizable icons in college sports. The famous “winged” design dates from 1938 when Coach Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler arrived from Princeton to begin a new era in Michigan football. Even as the design and composition of helmets evolved from stitched cowhide to high-tech, molded plastic, the winged design has remained the pre-eminent symbol of Michigan football. Other Michigan athletic teams have adopted the winged design for their own headgear as well.

The distinctive helmet would also have practical advantages on the field. Crisler figured the helmet would help his quarterbacks find receivers downfield. “There was a tendency to use different colored helmets just for receivers in those days, but I always thought that would be as helpful for the defense as for the offense,” Crisler recalled.

In any event, the new helmet made a successful debut in the 1938 season opener against Michigan State. The Wolverines defeated the Spartans 14-0 behind two touchdown runs by sophomore Paul Kromer to gain their first win over Michigan State in four years.

Those famous helmets has helped Michigan land many football recruits and has remained one of the distinctive features of the University of Michigan athletic program with many of the other sports teams taking on the winged helmet design. Along with the Big House it is a proud tradition in Ann Arbor.

There is only one other university in Division 1 football that wears the winged helmet and that is the University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens.

A big thank you to Fritz Crisler for bringing a great uniqueness to the University of Michigan along with the forward pass.

Hail To Coach Rod

Coach Rod at CrislerCoach Rod addresses the crowd at Crisler arena during halftime of the 80-70 whipping Michigan gave OSU

“I’ve been called a lot of things in the last month. Some of them haven’t been real friendly,” he quipped. “One of the best things anyone called me it was one of the former lettermen last night. He said, ‘Coach Rod, you are a Michigan Man.’ And you’re damn right I am. Go Blue!”

I am looking forward to the upcoming football season. I am liking what I am hearing from him.

And in another case of Buckeye fans showing their class….

Rodriguez’s message rang clear over the obscenities and catcalls from about 100 Ohio State fans seated in the last few rows of Crisler’s upper bowl.

And Coach Rod gave no predictions for The Game, which I am happy to hear that he did not. I really don’t like stuff like that, but I will admit that Tressel backed it up.

Michigan Chomps the Gators!

Category : Sports

I am literally in shock over the fact that Michigan beat the Florida Gators. I honestly did not think that they had a chance of winning the Capital One Bowl Game against Florida, but they did it!

MICHIGAN WON!!! MICHIGAN WON!!!

Carr Wins Last GameI am so happy for Lloyd Carr, because he got a win in his last game and goes out with an excellent record of 122-40. His players were able to carry him off on their shoulders. He deserved this win, because he has done so much for the University of Michigan and for the players he has coached. I am also very happy for the seniors who finally got a win in a bowl game.

Now we move onto the next season with Rich Rodriguez and I as a fan am very excited to see where he takes the team. GO BLUE!!!

The Patriots Did It….

Category : Sports

Patriots HelmetAnd so did Tom Brady and Randy Moss. Tonight was a great day if you are a fan of the NFL and especially if you are a fan of the New England Patriots.

While I am first and foremost a Detroit Lions fan, I have rooted for the Patriots since 1985 as my secondary team, because, well…. because the Lions suck! I needed somebody who was good to root for. My high school team was the Cousino Patriots and the New England version was playing well in 1985 and would eventually go on to play the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX. So I have rooted for them since. Then the Patriots drafted Tom Brady who played for the University of Michigan and I was delighted, especially when he got a chance to play and lead them to multiple Super Bowls.

Tom BradyBut I am happy for the Patriots and Tom Brady for multiple reasons. The first reason is because it is nice to see a team finally quiet the Miami Dolphins and their fans. Granted they won’t be completely quiet until the Pats go 19-0, but it is nice to see them quieted in regards to that undefeated regular season. I look forward to seeing Bill Belichick toasting his own glass of champagne on 3 February 2008. So between my liking of the Pats and my disliking of the Dolphins, I am a happy man.

The other reason I am happy is because Tom Brady is a Michigan Man and I am so proud as a Wolverine fan to see someone who has worn the Maize and Blue do so well. Michigan is not known as a quarterback school, but they sure have turned out a few good ones. I also am happy because seeing Tom break Peyton Manning’s record for touchdown passes is cool. I really do not like Peyton (not necessarily as a person, but more as a QB) and to see his name taken off the record makes me happy. But to have a Michigan Man do it is even better, because it reminds me of when Charles Woodson beat Peyton for the Heisman trophy.

Here’s hoping that the Pats can go 19-0, because we know the Lions will probably never see the Super Bowl let alone a 19-0 record. GO PATS!!!

Michigan Wins the GLI!!!

Category : Sports

It has been since 1996 that Michigan has won the GLI and it has probably been about that long since I last got to see them play in the GLI. But they did it today!

And to make Michigan’s win even better the Spartans lost the 3rd place game to first year participant Providence. So they went from being the defending GLI Champs to being the GLI ChUmps.

GO BLUE!!! Let’s win the National Championship now!

Michigan Hockey in the GLI 2007

Category : Mobile Blogging, Sports

Here we are at the Michigan hockey game in Joe Louis Arena for the Great Lakes Invitational. Michigan is currently kicking Providence’s butt 6-0 in the third period. In fact as I was typing this they scored the 6th goal.

It has been fun hanging out with the family and teaching the kids about the beautiful sport of college hockey. And also teaching them all of the Michigan hockey cheers. Of course only the clean ones. ;-) All in all it has been a great game and I look forward to watching Michigan win the GLI Championship tomorrow.

GO BLUE!!!

UPDATE….

Michigan will be playing Michigan Tech for the GLI Championship. The poor Spartans won’t be able to defend their title, because their goalie is a SIEVE! LOL

My Thoughts on Coach Rod

Category : Sports

I was always told that when you should always start off with the positive and then go to the negative. But I am not going to do that with this post.

Some of the things that bothers me about Coach Rod is that last year when he went through the whole thing with the University of Alabama head coaching position, he said that he did not want to leave his position at WVU, because it was his alma mater. He was committed to them for the long haul, or so he said. He said that before, but now somehow that all changes. Why?

The other thing that bothers me is that he seemed to have made some really dumb coaching decisions when they played Pitt this year. I don’t like the fact that he couldn’t beat their chief rival in what should have been a fairly easy win. Which leads into the next thing….

I don’t like the fact that he said today that he treats every game the same, but some are more important than others. I don’t want him to set up a “Beat OSU clock” like they have at that school down south or to go into the next basketball game and guarantee a win in 340 days. But I would like to have heard him say that he will do what it takes to beat them. That the tide will turn in that series back the way it should be. But he doesn’t know the depth of that rivalry or even the one with that team up north and that other team down south, but more western. He will understand it soon enough I am sure.

Now for the positives….

I like his pedigree. This guy grew up 5 miles from one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history and Michigan history. The man who made Meeechigan what it is today. The man who built The Big House and the golf course and so much of the University’s athletic facilities. And that man would be Fielding H. Yost. Whose “point-a-minute” teams had 56 consecutive wins from 1901-1905 and had a 2,821 to 42 point difference with an average of 50-1 per game. He had some high powered offensive teams. So knowing that they both come from the same area, albeit 100 years apart, is nice.

And Coach Rod also has attachments with Michigan’s other great coach, Bo Schembechler, because Coach Rod played under Don Nehlen, who was an assistant under Bo for many years. And I know Don carried those ideals with him, so hopefully it has rubbed off as much as possible on Coach Rod.

Rich RodriguezLastly, I like the fact that Coach Rod is known as the “godfather” of the spread offense. Michigan has needed to change up it’s offense to compete with the big boys and keep their winning ways. The teams in the SEC have stepped up their programs and become the dominant conference in college football and if Michigan wants to compete, I believe that the spread offense is the best way for us to do it. I have great respect and admiration for Lloyd Carr, and appreciate all that he has done for Michigan football but the time has come for a change and I think Coach Rod can bring that change.

Congratulations Coach Rod in being the 16th head football coach at the University of Michigan and only the 11th since 1901. We have a tradition of coaches staying for the long haul and not jumping to the next bigger job (is there any bigger?) so do us proud, because “those who stay will be champions”. We will stand by you as fans and show you our undying loyalty like we have always done with our coaches.
