I Am Going to Step on Some Toes

So consider yourself warned…

Many people know that I am a huge fan of the TV show The Biggest Loser. I have watched it since the very first season and I have not missed an episode. It is one of the things that inspired me to put down the bowl of ice cream, get off of the couch, and change my lifestyle. I was borderline obese and I needed to do something. I had tried diets but it was time to change my life if I wanted to lose the weight, keep it off and live for a long time. I found that inspiration while watching The Biggest Loser.

Sean AlgaierIn season 3 of The Biggest Loser I had a fellow youth pastor, that I knew through an online community (YMX), participate in the show as the representative for Maine. His name is Matthew McNutt and you can read his story on his website. This season there is another youth pastor that is participating on the show (and was sadly voted off this last week), whose name is Sean Algaier. It really got me to thinking, that in my limited view of the youth ministry world, there seems to be a lot of overweight youth pastors/workers out there.

I think that is a sad thing. Youth pastors are called to be an inspiration to the next generation and I think that we need to stop limiting that to only spiritual things. I believe that if we truly believe that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit then we need to practice that in how we take care of our bodies. I hope that in my current ministry that I am inspiring my teens to not only to live a godly life, but that I am also inspiring them to live a healthy and full life.

I am so grateful to Matthew and Sean for inspiring many youth pastors to start changing their lives and to start shedding their excess baggage, so that they can be their for their families and for their teenagers long term. I hope that this doesn’t just become a fad that ends up dying out, but I hope that youth pastors, pastor and Christ-followers everywhere take it upon themselves to push themselves and get healthy.

Matthew McNutt TBLI love what Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser has to say about weight loss, “The key to becoming a big loser is mathematically very simple: Eat less, move more.” And if you need someone to get up in your face and push you, like Bob and Jillian do on the show, the find someone to do that. The most important thing is that you do it. I hope and pray that the Church in America can not only show the world that living for Christ is the best way to live, but I also hope that we can show them that being healthy is also important. And I hope that youth pastors everywhere will take the lead on this.

Firecracker 5K & Mullet-boy Update

Last night I emailed Eric Thuemmel, who is the person in charge of the Firecracker 5K, about the race and asked him if it was a race around a high school track or if it is a road race, because on the Run Michigan website it indicated it as a road race and not track race. And he emailed me back today and told me that indeed it was a road course that it “starts at the high school, runs to 1st St. beach, does a loop of the beach area, and then finishes at the high school.” So I have decided to run in the Firecracker 5K.

I am both excited and nervous about this. With this being my first ever 5K and actually my first ever run I think that is somewhat to be expected. If you would have told me last year when we were up at Manistee for the Manistee National Forest Festival that the next year I would be running a 5K, I would have laughed. But after losing about 50 pounds and getting into the best shape of my life I can now see it as a possibility. Hopefully, this will not be my last 5K.

By now you are probably wondering what all of this has to do with my post about mullet-boy. Well, let me tell you. In the reply email that Eric sent me after I told that I would then be running in the 5K he told me that he knows who mullet-boy is, because he was a former student of Eric’s at Ludington High School. I died laughing after hearing that because how ironic is that? He also told me that mullet-boy is very proud of his mullet and would be pleased of his notoriety. And he should be proud of his mullet, because it was one righteous mullet.

Over and Under 200

Since I moved my blog over to WordPress from Blogger about 5 months ago, I have had 241 spam comments caught by Akismet. If you don’t have Akismet installed on your blog then you are missing out on one of the coolest tools for blogging. It is so nice to know that Akismet is there doing it’s job and preventing my blog from being inundated with spam. And for some reason a majority of come on my blog post Amazing Grace (Not A Movie Review) for whatever reason. That is the over 200.

The under 200 is how much I weigh, which I probably have not been under 200 in 10 years. About 4 years ago I weighed 265 and went on the Atkins diet and lost 55 pounds. I then went back up to 235 about a year or so later and maintained right around there. Then back in August Kimmy and I got a membership at World Gym and we started eating better. I began to shed some weight due to the fact that I go to the gym 5 days a week for about 1.5-2 hours per day. So between that and eating better I have now gone below 200 pounds. I really do not have a goal weight that I am shooting for, but I am enjoying the fact that I now wear the same size jeans that I did in high school. I also enjoy working out and being able to run at least 2 miles on the treadmill everyday at the gym. So life is good.
